Sales Director is a team leader charged with the task of managing a group of Sales Managers to be as effective as possible. Sales Directors are high-level executives whose roles in the companies they work for entail crafting national or international sales plans, justifying those plans to a board of directors or CEO, and supervising regional sales managers to ensure that they are leading and mentoring their teams successfully.
Director Qualities Needed

Because the role involves a high degree of trend analysis, market monitoring, and result tracking, Sales Directors must be number-oriented individuals with strong math skills and well-developed business senses.

A good Sales Director must be extremely well informed about the market in which he or she works, and therefore able to accurately forecast sales predictions and shifts in the marketplace, both on a national scale and also for the individual regions under his or her charge.

But, the position is not exclusively mathematical. Rather, it also demands well-developed interpersonal skills, because Sales Directors are managers of large teams and must be able to identify and acquire the best talent possible for the companies they serve.

It is also crucial for Sales Directors to maintain close, trusting relationships with those under their charge and facilitate open communication between branches and employees.
Qualifications and Requirements for a Sales Director Role

Though most who reach the level of Director have earned Bachelors or Masters Degrees and much more have earned advanced professional certifications in their fields, an experience is the only firm prerequisite for this job.

In the world of sales, results are king. So Sales Directors typically earn their positions by starting out as phenomenal salespersons, being promoted to Sales Managers and excelling in their positions until earning the title of Director. In sales, profits are the measure of success. So if you can prove yourself as the top sales resource for the companies you work for, you will move up the career ladder quickly.

For those looking to hone their skills and stand out in the job market, however, it is highly recommended that you earn professional certifications in Strategic Sales, Account Management, and Sales Management.
